Mixing Different Styles

One of the hottest trends in interior design today is the mixing of periods and styles. Hopefully this is a theme that will last because it adds dimension and interest to any project. An eclectic space is one where a person participates rather than being lambasted by an overwhelming theme.

How does one go about this without creating a room that is incongruous and disjointed? Often the process is natural because people are innately drawn to similar things. When I say similar, I mean that there is an element of commonality such as color, weight, lines, material, ect. For example if most of the furnishings in a room are predominately weathered in their appearance, they all together create a cohesive harmony. If you then wanted to add a moment of dramatic punch, one amazing contemporary light feature will stand out while also exemplifying the special qualities of the aged pieces.

By choosing to make just the lighting contemporary, it is intentional and purposeful. Fabric is another way to stimulate the senses and bring the room together. By accessorizing the furniture with pillows that share a common thread in their color or pattern the differences become less apparent and more deliberate. It is all about give and take, balance and harmony. That is why this is a bit confusing because what makes it work are the pieces similarity but also their differences.
